The first edition of the Leuven Marathon will be held on Sunday 19 April 2026. More than six months before the starting shot sounds, enthusiasm is running high. No fewer than 10,000 participants, including 3,000 Leuven residents, have already registered.
A few months ago, the streets of Leuven and Brussels filled with 28,000 runners and 180,000 spectators for the very first edition of the European Running Championships. A success story that will be given an extra chapter in 2026 in the form of a legacy event: the Leuven Marathon.
“The enthusiasm to run through the streets of Leuven again is palpable. Ten days after registration opened, at least 10,000 sports enthusiasts have already accepted this sporting challenge on Sunday 19 April,” says Thomas Huyberechts of organiser Golazo.
More than half of the participants (54%) will be at the start of the half marathon, while 23% of the participants will be lacing up their running shoes for the full marathon. The remaining 23% is opting for the 10-kilometre distance.
Sporting DNA of the (student) residents of Leuven
The enthusiasm for the first edition of the Leuven Marathon is also strong locally. Of the 10,000 registered participants, no fewer than 3,000 are from Leuven itself.
“This is fantastic news for the Leuven Marathon! The fact that we have reached the 10,000-registration mark so quickly proves the enormous appeal of this sporting event,” says Councillor for Sport Christophe Stockman. “But what pleases me most is that more than 3,000 Leuven residents will be at the starting line. This confirms that Leuven is a true sports city where everyone can take part. I am really looking forward to the atmosphere that our runners and supporters will bring to the city again!”
Another striking statistic: students also like to show their sporty side. At least 1,500 students will be at the starting line. A healthy mind in a healthy body? The enthusiasm and belief are clearly there.
